The comment that got me three clients in one week
In January, I left a comment on a post by a founder I had never spoken to. It was 47 words. Within 72 hours, three people who had seen that comment had sent me a connection request. One of them became a client within the week.
I have since run this as a deliberate strategy for clients and the results are consistent. Strategic commenting is the most underused growth lever on LinkedIn. Here is why it works and exactly how to do it.
Why comments outperform posts for reach
When you post original content, it reaches your existing network first. LinkedIn's algorithm decides how far it travels from there. When you comment on someone else's post, particularly one that is already performing well, your comment is seen by everyone who engages with that post. Many of them are not in your network. You are borrowing distribution from someone who has already earned it.
The anatomy of a comment that works
A comment that builds your reputation does three things. It adds something the post did not already say. It demonstrates your specific expertise or perspective. And it makes the reader want to see more of what you think.
- Do not just agree. "Great post!" is noise. "This point about X resonates. We saw the same pattern when Y happened" is a contribution.
- Be specific. The more specific your observation, the more credible you appear.
- End with a question or a perspective that invites response. Conversations on LinkedIn are visible to everyone.
The practical system
Identify 10 to 15 accounts your ideal clients follow. Check their posts every morning. Leave two to three substantive comments. Do this for 30 days. The compounding effect on your visibility and the quality of your inbound is significant. It takes 20 minutes a day. Most people do not do it because it feels small. That is exactly why it works.
