Why your LinkedIn bio is quietly killing your credibility

4 min read · Personal Branding · Boldface Playbook

You have three seconds. That is the average time someone spends deciding whether to accept your connection request, click your profile or keep scrolling. In those three seconds, two things are doing all the work: your profile photo and your headline.

Most LinkedIn headlines read like a job title. "Founder at X" or "CEO | Helping companies grow" or the worst: "Entrepreneur | Speaker | Author | Consultant." None of these answer the only question the reader is actually asking: why should I care about you?

What your headline is actually for

Your headline is not a job description. It is a value proposition. It should tell someone what you do, who you do it for and what outcome you create, in under twelve words. That is a hard constraint. It forces clarity.

Weak: "Founder & CEO | Passionate about startups"
Strong: "I help D2C founders build LinkedIn audiences that convert to revenue"

The About section nobody reads, and why

Most About sections are written in the third person or are structured like a CV. Neither of these work because LinkedIn is a conversational platform. The About section that performs is written like a direct message to your ideal reader. First person. Specific. Ending with a clear ask or invitation.

The fix, in order

  • Rewrite your headline as a value proposition. Who do you help, with what, to achieve what outcome.
  • Rewrite your About section in first person, starting with the problem your ideal client has.
  • Add a Featured section with your best content, a case study or a direct CTA.
  • Make sure your banner image says something, not nothing.

These four changes take two hours. The compounding effect of getting them right lasts for years.
